Why Should Psychology Matter To OT's?
Psychology is a vast
subject with multiple divisions under its umbrella. All of them, it could be argued,
have integral meaning to what we do as occupational therapists.
We are more than just our bodies.
The psychology of humans is complex, dynamic and still not fully known. It is
so pervasive in our actions, thoughts and identity, that occupational therapists
have to consider psychology in addition to any physical, social and
environmental factors at play with a person, yet we're not always taught the
fundamentals of psychology.
To have some understanding of our psychological make up in addition to our
physical makeup means that we as Occupational therapists can approach the
person in a total and holistic manner. Which is exactly what we are all about!
